On the morning of May 9th, 2008, junior Sydney Aichs traveled to Albemarle High School to take an advanced placement exam. When turning out of the Forest Lakes South entrance on to Route 29, a tractor trailer driver traveling northbound ran a red light at the intersection and hit Sydney's car. The loss of Sydney hit the community hard as she was a loving young lady. She was an AHS Honor student and member of the National Honor Society. Sydney was an avid sports fan and athlete who played girls soccer, volleyball and ran indoor track. Sydney lived by the motto of "Live, Love, Laugh" and cherished nothing more than her relationships with family and friends. Sydney loved animals and did everything in her power to make their lives better while working at Georgetown Animal Hospital.
Every year in May, friends, family and the AHS community come together to remember Sydney and run in her memory. All proceeds go to the Sydney Aichs Scholarship Memorial Fund. Each year a current AHS senior is awarded with the scholarship.
